Advancing Warehouse Automation: GXO Collaborates with Apptronik to Test Humanoid Robots

Humanoid Robotics logistics

In a significant move towards revolutionizing warehouse operations, GXO Logistics has partnered with Apptronik, a renowned robot manufacturer, to introduce Apollo, a humanoid robot, into warehouse environments. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by GXO to integrate advanced robotics into their logistics processes, aiming to enhance efficiency and safety.

Pioneering Humanoid Robotics in Logistics

The partnership between GXO and Apptronik is an early-stage proof-of-concept program designed to adapt humanoid robots to the dynamic needs of the logistics sector. "We’re thrilled to collaborate with Apptronik on developing their AI-enabled humanoid robot," said Adrian Stoch, Chief Automation Officer at GXO. "Apollo has immense potential to add value throughout the distribution center, particularly in labor-intensive tasks. These robots can reduce repetitive work, improve safety, and allow our associates to focus on more complex, value-added activities."

Apollo: The Next-Generation Warehouse Robot

Apptronik’s Apollo is a 5’8” tall humanoid robot capable of carrying up to 55 lbs and operating on swappable batteries to ensure maximum uptime. Powered by linear actuators designed to mimic human muscle mechanics, Apollo boasts a full range of mobility. Its advanced force control architecture and flexible safety zone perimeter enable it to work safely alongside human workers. The collaboration will initially focus on fine-tuning Apollo’s AI in a lab setting before deploying it to a US distribution center.

Enhancing Logistics Operations

"Our mission is to develop versatile robots for real-world applications," stated Jeff Cardenas, co-founder and CEO of Apptronik. "We are dedicated to helping GXO optimize its logistics operations and create a safer, more engaging workplace with Apollo. This R&D program is crucial for launching a scalable automation solution for GXO."

A Commitment to Innovation

This partnership marks GXO’s second venture into humanoid robotics. In 2023, GXO increased its warehouse automation units by 50% and trialed various AI-powered robotics and autonomous vehicles, underscoring the growing importance of automation in global logistics operations. By integrating Apollo into their warehouses, GXO aims to push the boundaries of what’s possible in warehouse automation, setting new standards for efficiency and safety.

Conclusion

As GXO Logistics and Apptronik collaborate on this groundbreaking project, the future of warehouse automation looks promising. The successful integration of Apollo into warehouse environments could revolutionize logistics operations, enhancing productivity, safety, and overall efficiency. This partnership is a testament to GXO’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to stay at the forefront of the logistics industry.
